Retinal Astrocytoma

Introduction

Can be associated with tuberous sclerosis complex, NF or it may be sporadic.
- Can also be associated with Stargardt's, gyrate atrophy and RP.
- Typically asymptomatic, but can cause metamorphopsia, floaters or other visual disturbances
- Primarily exists as 3 types

Dead Giveaways

Appearance:

  • From eye-wiki. Astrocytomas can appear anywhere, and on fundus can typically resemble a second optic nerve head

OCT

Appears as a raised indistinct and abnormal mixture of retinal cells. (Hamartoma)

diagnostic features

3 Types of Astrocytoma:

  • T1: relatively flat, smooth, semi-transparent grey-white lesions without calcification

  • T2: raised, multinodular opaque calcified lesions

  • T3: Transitional with features of T1 and 2
