Endogenous Endophthalmitis

Introduction

Endogenous endophthalmitis is due to the spread of bacteria or fungus from the blood from a remote infection side

This is an ocular emergency

Dead Giveaways

Presentation:

  • Whitish lesions primarily in the choroid, rapidly involving the retina and vitreous

  • Other signs can include roth spots, flame haemorrhages, CWS, ERM, cystoid macula oedema, optic atrophy and phthisis bulbi

  • Retinal NV may also occur which is a devastating consequence

Risk Factors:

  • Immunocompromised

  • Long-term IV catheters

  • Recent invasive surgery
